Please allow me a few moments to introduce my artwork, and myself. My name is Glen Cowan; I am a 58-year-old resident of Paradise, California. My experience tinkering with mechanical things began at an early age, in my hometown of Covington, Pennsylvania. My grandfather was a blacksmith and my father was a machinist. In the past I have worked as a printer, on a hotshot crew- fighting forest fires, painting houses, doing construction, and manufacturing. For the past twentyfive years I have owned and operated a small business that builds and repairs machines used for testing the structural integrity of aircraft and aerospace structures. |

| I began making metal silhouettes in early 1992 and spend most of my time working out various images and trying new things. Starting with a flat sheet of steel, I cut, bend, and form the metal into another reality. The sculptures I create are my way of conveying the grace and complexity of things in nature. My art has a unique way of changing appearance depending on the amount of light it is given just as with all things in their natural environment. |

The photographs in the galleries on this site give some idea of the type of art I create. The pieces are entirely made from plasma cut steel. My coloring process is unique and usually is not the typical heat treated or black silhouette work that has become commonplace. Of course, the reflective quality of the colored metal, and the dimension achieved through layering are not entirely captured on film. While much of my work is for interior wall hanging, I also do freestanding pieces, railing, gates, and large outdoor sculptures

To date most of my work has been wildlife related including birds in flight, creatures of the seas, forests, and forest animals. However, I have also done southwestern and motorcycle themes, and garden art. I frequently do commissioned work as well. I am always looking for new inspiration and ideas, and ways to get more dimension from a flat sheet of steel. I have sold my work publicly and through galleries for several years. Presently I have work at the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, California, and the Northwoods Gallery in Chester, California. |
